An Exploration of Shape and Matter
01 April 2022 - 01 March 2023
‘Related Forms’ seeks to investigate our essential notions of shape. The exhibition brings together artists working in two and three dimensions. This unbounded approach highlights the relationships between the artworks in their shared pursuit of reducing structure to its simplest form.
The exhibition brings together over 20 artists. Despite their distinctive practices, the artists exhibited are united by a collective fascination with structure and shape. Their artworks, though varied in media, display overlaps in core principles including space, process, contrast, tension and colour.
The question “what is it to construct ‘Pure Form’?” is one that has intrigued modern artists. This becomes even more evident in abstract art, where the act of adding and stripping back lies in careful balance. The existence of form, or lack thereof, opens a rich dialogue. The sculptor Henry Moore once remarked that ‘A hole can have as much shape meaning as a solid mass’. At its core, it is a question of existence and of deeper meaning.
In bringing these works together, 'Related Forms’ provokes unexpected resonances between artists working in seemingly disparate fields. The exhibition comes at a time when the wider world, together with these artists, seeks harmony, simplicity and solace.
‘Related Forms’ is on now at Row Gallery until March 2023
Rhythms of Nature in Paint
01 April 2022 - 01 March 2023
Row Gallery is delighted to present ‘Shifting Grounds: Abstract Landscapes’, an exhibition that brings together five contemporary landscape painters.
The exhibition, which comprises over 30 paintings, presents the varying degrees of abstraction used by the artists to negotiate their relationship with nature. Earth, sky, and sea are recorded through gestural brush marks. The layers of texture, colour and motion present within each painting seek to prompt a visceral response in the viewer. Within these landscapes, it is not a question of where, but why.
The fact that there are no figurative elements in the works creates an opportunity for the viewer to create their own narrative and reflect their own experiences onto the works. It is also a testament to the artists’ masterful handling of their chosen material.
This exhibition features work by:
Martin Caulfield
Ursula Harker
Chloe Moreton
